Van News - Why safely disposing of an End of Life (EOV) vehicle is important
Over 2 million tonnes of material from used vehicles currently exists in the UK to be recycled of disposed. In fact, nearly two million cars every year are recycled in this country, with only a small percentage of their overall mass being sent to landfill. Of a typical car around 80% of the chassis and bodywork (mostly metals) can be reused again, and the energy cost of recycling this metal is far lower than what it costs to produce the metal anew.
Disposing cars isn’t just about recycling though – it’s also about safety. Over 20,000 tonnes of oil is removed from vehicles every year and up to half of it is disposed of in an improper manner which can lead to contamination of water supplies and the fertility of the surrounding soil. Not only is improper disposal of oil and other vehicle products a serious crime, it can seriously damage the environment and your community.
Even people who try to dispose of their car properly often get scammed or conned by local classified ads and companies promising to scrap their car for cash. In many cases these ‘buyers’ will take the money to scrap the car and then simply dump it. Even worse, some people will sell a defective car to someone else to drive! Luckily there is an easy away around this.
When you’re looking for a company to dispose your vehicle, make sure you only send your car to registered scrap yards! This way you can be sure that your van or car will be disposed of in a safe and professional manner. A good van salvage yard will first minimise waste by stripping any usable Van Spares or Van Parts before disposing of the vehicle carcass in the most environmentally manner open to them.
It also means all the proper paperwork and procedure will be followed and you’ll have the evidence in your hands, so there will be no need to worry about having your old vehicle turning up on the roads still registered to you!
