Restore your bike!

Restoring a bike has always been a dream of mine, even though I’m not mechanically inclined to do so whatsoever! But I suppose that doesn’t really matter since I’m totally determined to learn how. I need to know where to get the motorcycle parts and accessories though. I hear that Japanese bikes are pretty easy to fix up, but at the same time the parts can get rather pricey. However my dad did say that he wouldn’t mind chipping in to help me so I’m thinking price won’t be much of an object for this particular project. Another suggestions someone made was to get a nice bmw or Ducati. This however was told to me that parts are also few and far between which essentially bothers me. I know though that I may come across some variation of this problem along the way but for my first project I’d like to keep it as simple as possible.

Since I’ve never restored a bike before, I’m not sure at how much I would be looking for in terms of spending money, or total cost in general. If I were looking at spending the least possible, what would one suggest as to what kind of bike to get. Like I said I’m no mechanic, so I’d be looking at something that is a bit easier in terms of repair and simplicity. I’m pretty set on making sure that I can also purchase all of parts and equipment from one place and keep it rather simple. If anyone has suggestions as to where I could pick up good parts that would be awesome.

Long term though, I am looking at making this a hobby. I would love to see others photos of bikes that they have restored as well as some information on how your own project took place and how it evolved. Did you have any unforeseen issues, or problems with parts and installation? And how long does it take from start to finish if you work on it for a few hours each day? IS this sort of project too hard for someone who doesn’t know much about mechanics? Just how much can one really learn from YouTube?
